Myth : Obesity is Cosmetic Disease.
Fact: (Obesity is a metabolic disease that is determined by physiological, psychological & environmental factors. It is an epidemic where India is the third most obese country in the world.
Myth : Patients have a restricted lifestyle post-surgery.
Fact: (Bariatric surgery is the first step towards overhauling the lifestyle. It helps restoring dignity with dramatic weight-loss over time, giving new self-confidence and beginning to a more fruitful life.).
Myth : Bariatric surgery is dangerous.
Fact: (Any type of surgery has associated risks. Recent technical advances have however helped to minimize these risks. It is a FDA approved treatment for morbidly obese patients. In addition, it also assists patients in overcoming associated diseases like Diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and sleep apnoea.)
Myth : Weight gain occurs after surgery.
Fact: (This surgery requires a regular follow-up care for at least one year and substantial lifelong commitment to give best results. Without changes to the daily pattern of eating and activity, the patient is likely to fail to maintain healthy weight.
Myth : Isn’t liposuction similar to bariatric surgery?
Fact: (Liposuction is a body sculpting surgery and does not control the root cause of obesity. On the other hand, bariatric surgery is a metabolic procedure to control obesity & resolve co-morbidities by managing the root cause of obesity.)
Myth : People look older because of loose skin.
Fact: (Some skins become loose but the tone can be regained by proper exercise and massage)
Myth : Surgery leads to health problems in later life
Fact: (Post surgery people become energy efficient with better immunological status. Also associated diseases like Diabetes, Hypertension etc are usually cured)
Myth : Post-surgery, you won’t be able to eat anything good.
Fact: (Patient can eat qualitatively the same food like normal person and quantitatively sufficient for one’s requirement. However, patients are educated to choose the right and healthy food. They learn new, reasonable, healthy eating behavior.)
Myth : Certain surgeries prevent proper nutrition.
Fact: (Deficiencies are preventable by supplements for some time and regular testing of nutrition levels post-surgery.)
Myth : Affects pregnancy at later life.
